Lawsuit alleges Saint Joseph Health surgeon left sponges in patient's thigh

Khris and Amanda Martin have filed a lawsuit against Saint Joseph Health System in Lexington, Ky.; its parent company KentuckyOne Health; and a plastic surgeon, Michael J. Bass, MD, for allegedly leaving sponges in Ms. Martin's thigh, according to a Lexington Herald-Leader report.

In the lawsuit, the couple alleges that Ms. Martin came to Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington in July 2013 to undergo debridement and a skin graft. The procedures were performed by Dr. Bass. One month later, after an ultrasound, it was discovered that there were five surgical sponges in her leg.

The lawsuit claims that Ms. Martin suffered a staph infection and excessive buildup of fluid due to the medical error. The lawsuit was filed on June 23 in Fayette Circuit Court.

According to Dr. Bass' attorney, however, his client's position is "that he met all applicable standards of care," according to the report. The lawsuit does not say how much money the Martins are seeking.
