LA BioMed receives NIH grant to study HAI vaccines

The National Institutes of Health has awarded Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute a grant to research and develop vaccines against healthcare-associated infections.

The four-year, $1.3 million grant was awarded to John Edwards, MD, and Ashraf Ibrahim, PhD, infectious disease specialists at LA BioMed to develop a vaccine to protect against Candida and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The researchers are collecting and studying samples of patients currently enrolled in a clinical trial testing the efficacy of a Candida vaccine.

"LA BioMed's infectious disease specialists are creating a new generation of vaccines to combat these infections," said David Meyer, PhD, LA Biomed president and CEO. "Securing federal funding for such important studies is critical to advancing innovations and developing the medical breakthroughs needed to protect patient health."
