Kent State officials confirm mumps case on campus

Health officials with Kent (Ohio) State University have confirmed a case of the mumps among the student population.

"University Health Services is advising all students and university employees that it is likely that the mumps virus is circulating in the vicinity and advising everyone to be aware of the signs and symptoms of this virus," the university health department said in an online campus health advisory.

The mumps is often spread through sneezing, coughing and the sharing of common items like cups that come into contact with saliva. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite in addition to painful swollen salivary glands.
