Is Twitter a Platform to Assess Care Quality?

Approximately 11 percent of tweets to hospitals in the English National Health Service pertained to hospital care quality, according to a study in BMJ Quality & Safety.

Of the tweets including mentions of care quality, 8 percent of the tweets discussed patient experience, making it the most frequent topic. Three percent of tweets commented on effectiveness or safety of care. The majority of tweets regarding care quality — 77 percent — were positive.

Researchers conclude there was no clear relationship between Twitter sentiment and quality measures at individual facilities. They suggest using social media as a quality monitoring and improvement tool should undergo a formal evaluation, but hospitals may be able use tweets to identify quality improvement areas, according to the study.
