How Does Global Healthcare Quality Stack Up Against Other Industries?

Globally, 24 percent of healthcare organizations financially incentivize employees for quality, compared with 30 percent of organizations from all industries, according to an American Society for Quality report.

"The ASQ Global State of Quality Research: Discoveries 2013" includes 1,991 surveys on quality practices in companies from 22 countries. While the report did not break down responses for every industry, it did highlight some differences between the manufacturing industry and the service industry, which includes healthcare, as well as differences between healthcare and all other industries.


Here are some key findings:

Reporting quality measures
•    Sixty-seven percent of the 82 healthcare organization respondents report quality measures across the entire organization, compared with 51 percent of all 1,991 organization respondents.
•    Eighteen percent of healthcare organizations report quality measures across divisions, compared with 15 percent of all organizations.
•    Six percent of healthcare organizations report quality measures across programs, compared with 17 percent of all organizations
•    Seven percent of healthcare organizations report quality measures within programs, compared with 11 percent of all organizations.

Using quality measures
•    Seventy-four percent of healthcare organizations agree that they use quality measures to drive higher performance by promoting challenging goals, compared with 72 percent of all organizations.
•    Thirty-four percent of healthcare organizations agree that they use quality measures as part of variable performance compensation, compared with 52 percent of all organizations.
•    Fifty-five percent of healthcare organizations agree that they use quality measures for trending and/or predictive analytics, compared with 65 percent of all organizations.

Providing incentives to encourage employees to meet critical quality targets

•    Forty-two percent of healthcare organizations use informal manager recognition as an incentive, compared with 55 percent of all organizations.
•    Thirty-five percent of healthcare organizations use nonfinancial awards as incentives, compared with 24 percent of all organizations.
•    Twenty-four percent of healthcare organizations use financial incentives, compared with 30 percent of all organizations.
•    Twenty percent of healthcare organizations use honorary awards as an incentive, compared with 14 percent of all organizations.
•    One percent of healthcare organizations use other variable compensation as an incentive, compared with 12 percent of all organizations
•    Eight percent of healthcare organizations provide no incentives, compared with 7 percent of all organizations.
