House bill would boost NIH budget by 3%

Under a draft spending bill released by a House of Representatives committee on Wednesday, the National Institutes of Health would see its budget increase by 3.2 percent in 2018 to $35.2 billion.

If adopted, the measure would also block President Donald Trump's proposal to cut the payments NIH distributes to cover overhead research costs by two-thirds. Additionally, the bill overlooks another proposed Trump administration plan to abolish NIH's global health center, according to Science magazine.

"This bill reflects Republican priorities to cut spending and focus investments in programs our people need the most — public health and medical research, biodefense, fundamental education and proven programs that increase job growth," said Rodney Frelinghuysen, R-N.J., House appropriations chairman. "It also includes important provisions to stop government overreach."
