CDC launches app to prevent hearing loss

The CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health launched a new mobile application designed to measure workplace noise to help individuals assess their personal noise exposure and risk of hearing loss.

The new app is designed for iOS devices. In addition to heightening noise awareness among workers — especially those in industries like construction — the app can also assist industrial hygienists and occupational safety and health managers to quantify noise levels on the spot.

According to the NIOSH, 22 million workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels annually. Approximately $242 million is spent every year for workers' compensation related to hearing loss.
