C. diff increases mortality risk in cirrhosis patients

Cirrhosis patients who also are infected with Clostridium difficile had higher mortality rates and lengths of stay, according to research presented at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Researchers compared and analyzed C. diff incidence rates from 2009 and found cirrhotic patients with C. diff had an average in-hospital mortality rate of 15.9 percent, compared with 8.9 percent of cirrhotic patients without C. diff. Additionally, the average length of stay for cirrhotic patients with C. diff was 9.11 days longer than for cirrhotic patients without C. diff.

Researchers suggest further research is needed to reduce the C. diff burden for cirrhotic patients.
