The idea that hospitalists burn out more quickly than outpatient physicians is unsubstantiated in the literature, according to a study published in The Journal of Hospital Medicine.
Researchers performed a meta-analysis of studies from five medical databases detailing physician burnout. They found outpatient physician burnout was slightly more frequent than inpatient physician burnout, though the difference was not statistically significant.
The noted better comparative studies of hospitalist vs. outpatient physician burnout may be helpful in determining whether the apparent lack of trend is a real phenomenon.
