AORN updates perioperative guidelines: 5 things to know

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses is releasing the 2015 edition of the Guidelines for Perioperative Practice in January and it includes revised and new evidence-based guidelines for several topics.

Lisa Spruce, DNP, RN, spoke with Periop Insider, AORN's weekly newsletter, about the new edition. The following are five things to know.

1. A quarter of the guidelines have been updated from last year, and there are two brand-new guidelines on autologous tissue management and complementary care interventions.

2. The guideline for autologous tissue management give perioperative nurses some guidance on how to recover, process, package, label, store, track and replant the tissue safely.

3. The new guideline for complementary care interventions was "created to provide guidance for perioperative nurses when complementary care interventions are implemented in the perioperative setting, such as music therapy, hypnosis, massage, acupuncture and acupressure and aromatherapy," Dr. Spruce said.

4. One of the updated guidelines is the Guideline for Preoperative Patient Skin Antisepsis, in which the recommendations for pre-op bathing changed "significantly," according to Dr. Spruce.

5. The Guideline for Surgical Attire has also been updated, including the fact that covering the arms is now only required in restricted areas and instrument assembly area but not the semi-restricted area.
