AHRQ Launches Follow-Up Series of Reports on "Closing the Quality Gap"

Staff -
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has published a summary report on "Closing the Quality Gap: Revisiting the State of the Science," a new series on improving the quality of healthcare.

The report is based on research by the RAND Evidence-based Practice Center under contract to AHRQ. The new series will include eight reports and is a follow-up to the series "Closing the Quality Gap: A Critical Analysis of Quality Improvement Strategies," which AHRQ launched in 2004.

The new series of reports "broadens the scope of settings, interventions, and clinical conditions, while continuing the focus on improving the quality of health care through critical assessment of relevant evidence," according to the summary report.

The summary describes the scope and key messages of the eight reports. The topics the reports will discuss include the following:

•    Effectiveness of bundled payment programs

•    Effectiveness of the patient-centered medical home

•    Quality improvement strategies to address health disparities

•    Effectiveness of medication adherence interventions

•    Effectiveness of public reporting

•    Prevention of healthcare-associated infections

•    QI measurement of outcomes for people with disabilities

•    Healthcare and palliative care for patients with advanced and serious illness
