6 Statistics on Physician PQRS, eRx Participation

The number of eligible professionals participating in the Physician Quality Reporting System and the Electronic Prescribing Incentive Program (eRx) increased from 2011 to 2012 according to a data brief from CMS.

PQRS and eRx provide payment incentives to report quality measures and encourage electronic prescribing by eligible professionals. Payment adjustments are already in place for eligible professionals not utilizing eRx, and adjustments will take effect in 2015 for eligible professionals not using PQRS.

Here are six more statistics on PQRS and eRx participation.

1. The number of eligible professionals participating in PQRS increased 36 percent from 2011 to 2012.

2. Of 1,201,362 eligible professionals in 2012, 36.2 percent participated in PQRS.

3. Eligible professionals who see more Medicare patients are more likely to participate in PQRS. Fifty-two percent of eligible professionals who see more than 200 Medicare patients participated in PQRS compared to 18.5 percent of eligible professionals who see 25 or less Medicare patients.

4. The number of eligible professionals participating in eRx increased 22 percent from 2011 to 2012.

5. Of the 778,904 eligible professionals, 44.2 percent participated in eRx.

6. The number of eligible professionals subject to eRx payment adjustments fell by 55.9 percent.
