California senator pushes for warning labels on soda for third time: 3 things to know

California Sen. Bill Monning, D- Carmel, is not backing away from efforts for health warning labels on sugary drinks, reports Reuters.

Here are three things to know.

1. Sen. Monning on Monday for a third time introduced a bill that would place warning labels on soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages sold across the state, according to the report.

2. The senator's effort comes as officials and public health advocates have been increasingly critical of sugar as a key contributor to health epidemics like obesity and diabetes, the report states.

3. The legislation proposed by Sen. Monning would require companies like Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo. to put warning labels on beverages sold in California that have added sugars and have 75 or more calories per 12 ounces, according to the report.
