Univera urges physicians to 'Choose Wisely' when ordering treatments

Buffalo, N.Y.-based payer Univera Healthcare announced it will be one of the first insurers to participate in Choosing Wisely, a nationwide campaign launched in 2012 to reduce unnecessary and wasteful healthcare tests and treatments.

Univera has been licensed to work with Consumer Reports to distribute Choosing Wisely content and recommendations in New York to better inform shared decision making between patients and physicians.

"Our analysis of regional healthcare data will guide us to the Choosing Wisely recommendations that we know will have an immediate and positive impact on the quality of care in upstate New York," Matthew Bartels, MD, Univera Healthcare medical director for clinical quality, said in a statement.

The physician-led campaign, launched by the American Board of Internal Medicine, now has care recommendations from more than 60 medical societies.
