Single-payer doesn't control healthcare costs, Aetna CEO says

Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini said a single-payer health system wouldn't "generate any savings for the American public" during an interview on CNBC's "Closing Bell" Aug. 3.

Mr. Bertolini pointed to Colorado and Vermont as examples of futile single-payer initiatives. "There are no single-payer systems in the version that we think we want to create in this country. ... We need to talk about the costs of healthcare, and getting those costs under control, and that doesn't happen by changing who pays the bills."

In addition to commenting on a single-payer healthcare system, Mr. Bertolini said Congress should move past ACA repeal and replacement efforts.

"The ACA cannot be repealed, period, end of sentence," he said. "What we should do is fix it. So either everyone gets their heads together over in the Senate and the House and does the job that the American people needs them to do, and fix what we already have, or they should move on to something else."
