Molina reports $230M net loss, Humana's profits more than double in Q2 & more — 10 payer highlights

1. Molina reports $230M net loss in Q2, announces ACA exchange pullback 
Long Beach, Calif.-based Molina Healthcare recorded a $230 million net loss in the second quarter of fiscal year 2017 compared to net profit of $33 million in the same period the year prior.

2. Aetna grows profits 52% in Q2
Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna saw revenue decrease in the second quarter of fiscal year 2017, but lower operating expenses fueled a year-over-year surge in net income.

3. Sparks Clinic physicians, UnitedHealthcare split ties
Sparks Clinic physicians in Forth Smith, Ark., went out of network with Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealthcare Aug. 1.

4. Humana more than doubles net income in Q2
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana more than doubled its net income in the second quarter of fiscal year 2017, driven by improvements in its Medicare Advantage and individual commercial businesses.

5. Anthem to leave California's ACA marketplace in 16 of 19 regions
Next year Indianapolis-based Anthem will exit the majority of California's ACA exchange rating regions it participates in.

6. HealthAlliance, Empire strike tentative deal after more than year-long dispute
Kingston, N.Y.-based HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley and New York City-based Empire BlueCross BlueShield tentatively resolved a dispute ongoing since May 2016.

7. Pennsylvania eases Highmark's reporting requirements for Allegheny Health investments
The Pennsylvania Insurance Department will allow Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health to make investments in its acquired entity, Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network, with less oversight than previously required.

8. Coverage shakeup in Cleveland: University Hospitals joins Medical Mutual of Ohio's SuperMed network
Cleveland-based Medical Mutual of Ohio SuperMed members will gain in-network access to all Cleveland-based University Hospitals facilities and providers for the first time in 20 years.

9. Centene records 49% jump in net earnings as ACA exchange business inflates Q2 revenue
St. Louis-based Centene Corp. reported $254 million in net earnings in the second quarter of fiscal year 2017, a 49.4 percent increase from net earnings of $170 million in the same period last year.

10. Amerigroup, Renaissance Physicians ink risk-based contract
Renaissance Physicians Organization has entered into a risk-based contract with Virginia Beach, Va.-based Amerigroup that covers individuals with an Amerigroup Medicare Advantage plan in the Huston area.
