Karen Ignagni expected to leave AHIP before King v. Burwell decision

Karen Ignagni, president and CEO of America's Health Insurance Plans, is leaving to lead the New York City-based nonprofit health plan EmblemHealth.

Ms. Ignagni will assume her new role Sept. 1, although she is expected to leave AHIP in early June before the Supreme Court ruling on King v. Burwell, Politico reports.

While AHIP's board conducts a national search for her successor, it appointed Dan Durham, executive vice president for strategic initiatives, as interim CEO.

Ms. Ignagni formerly led the American Association of Health Plans for 10 years until it merged with the Health Insurance Association of America to form AHIP. She has been extremely influential with her understanding of health policy and knack for politics, and she is highly respected in the insurance industry.

"She's just an absolute powerhouse shaper of policy in this town for an industry that’s not really loved," a former Clinton administration official and insurance consultant told Politico.
