Indiana Hospitals Push for Expansion of Health Coverage

As Indiana attempts to find an alternative to Medicaid expansion, the Indiana Hospital Association has launched a statewide campaign on the benefits of getting the uninsured covered.

Republican Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has been working with HHS to expand Healthy Indiana Plan, a Medicaid program operating under a federal waiver. HIP uses Medicaid funds to create health coverage similar to high-deductible health plans and health savings accounts for poor and low-income adults.

The IHA created the campaign because many Indiana residents earn too much to receive coverage under HIP, but they also don't earn enough to receive subsidies for the healthcare law's insurance exchanges.

Indiana outright rejected the Medicaid expansion under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and remains as one of the many red states that will not move forward with the provision this year.
