In Louisiana, 200,000 sign up for Medicaid expansion in first week

The state of Louisiana saw 200,000 new Medicaid enrollees during its first week of the program's expanded eligibility, The Advocate reported.

Effective June 1, Louisiana became the 31st state to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act to hundreds of thousands by lifting the program's economic threshold. In doing so, adults who make below 138 percent of federal poverty level — $33,500 annually for a family of four or $16,200 individually — qualified for Medicaid.

Staring June 1 through next year, the state expects to enroll 375,000 adults in Medicaid. The state surpassed its goal of having half of those enrollees signed on before July 1, when coverage kicks in, according to The Advocate.

Louisiana also became the first state to determine Medicaid eligibility using existing food stamp information, turning one application into two.
