Health insurers in the news: Week in review August 7-13

1. How the 'Big 5' health insurers fared in Q2
The five largest health insurers in the nation released their financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2015.

2. Uninsured rate falls 5.6 points since 2013
The uninsured rate dropped to 11.7 percent in the first half of 2015, down from 17.3 percent in 2013, according to The Hill.

3. WellCare posts Q2 turnaround of $59.5M
Tampa, Fla.-based WellCare Health Plans, a private Medicare and Medicaid managed care company, reported adjusted net income of $59.5 million for the second quarter of fiscal year 2015, compared with an adjusted net loss of $3.1 million for the second quarter of last year.

4. AHA, AHIP square off over insurer mergers
The American Hospital Association submitted a letter to the Department of Justice last week requesting review of the proposed Anthem-Cigna and Humana-Aetna deals. The AHA stated that proposed mergers between the companies present "fundamentally different" antitrust issues than hospital mergers.
