Health Alliance exits ACA exchange

Urbana, Ill.-based Health Alliance pulled its individual health plans from the ACA exchange this week after reaching its enrollment cap before the marketplace closes Jan. 31.

"With the exit of many large carriers from the individual market and big premium increases from other carriers, Health Alliance had to plan ahead and set a limit on how many new enrollees it would accept for 2017 individual plans," the insurer said in a news release. Health Alliance said it will remove individual plans from HealthCare.gov, third-party vendors and its own HealthAlliance.org.

Only new enrollees for individual plans are affected by the enrollment cap. The limit will be instated for at least 180 days.

"We made this decision to avoid distraction from serving our existing customers and keep balance in our customer base," James Leonard, MD, Carle and Health Alliance CEO, said in a company release. "Health Alliance will continue offering its Medicare plans and all plans offered through employer groups in 2017 and will offer individual products again in the near future."
