Connecticut health insurance exchange calls for mandatory broker commissions

Leaders of Connecticut's health insurance exchange — Access Health CT — will consider requiring insurers offering health plans on the exchange to pay agents and brokers commission next year, according to CTMirror.

This year, insurance companies ceased paying commissions for health plans sold through Access Health CT. The exchange's CEO Jim Wadleigh said between 8,000 and 10,000 customers who purchased coverage through the exchange last year and didn't this year had used brokers in previous open enrollment periods, according to the report.

The Access Health CT board is expected to vote on the proposal Jan. 26. The plan does not specify how much the commissions would be.
