CMS proposes delaying file deadline for 2018 ACA exchange plans

CMS proposed revising the deadline for insurers to file qualified health plan applications and rates for 2018 ACA marketplace plans from May 3 to June 21, according to a Feb. 17 policy brief.

The revised timetable gives health plans an additional seven weeks to decide whether they want to participate on the 2018 ACA exchanges, Timothy Jost, a emeritus professor at Lexington, Va.-based Washington and Less University School of Law, wrote in a Health Affairs blog post.

The extended deadline is part of CMS' proposed rules to stabilize the individual and small group marketplaces for 2018. The rules include shortening the annual open enrollment period and requiring individuals to provide more documentation for special enrollment periods.

CMS also revised the deadline for insurers to file application corrections for quality health plans from Sept. 11 to Sept. 15, and pushed the states' deadline to send their final recommendations for quality health plans to CMS from Sept. 15 to Sept. 27. CMS said it will send final notices to insurers by Oct. 12, more than a month after the previous Sept. 22 deadline.
