The Medicare Part A inpatient hospital deductible will go up by $32 to $1,216 in calendar year 2014, CMS has announced.
The daily coinsurance amounts for 2014 will be $304 for a beneficiary's 61st through 90th day of hospitalization (days one through 60 are fully covered), $608 for lifetime reserve days — the extra days Medicare will cover with a high coinsurance after the 90-day benefit period ends, limited to 60 per person in their lifetime. Additionally, patients will pay $152 for days 21 through 100 of extended care services in a skilled nursing facility during a benefit period.
For calendar year 2013, beneficiaries paid $296 in coinsurance per day for days 61 through 90 of hospitalization, $592 for each lifetime reserve day and $148 for days 21 through 100 in a skilled nursing facility.
The maximum Medicare Part A monthly premium will go down by $15 to $426 in 2014. For beneficiaries and the spouses of beneficiaries who have accumulated 30 to 39 quarters of Medicare-covered employment, the premium will go down by $9 to $234 per month in 2014. Only people who don't have at least 10 years or 40 quarters of Medicare-covered employment and who aren't married to someone who qualified for coverage pay premiums for Part A.
