BCBS plans to launch private insurance exchange for retirees

Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are launching a private health insurance exchange for Medicare-eligible retirees this summer.

The new marketplace will offer BCBS Medicare Supplement Insurance, Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage in more than 45 states and Washington, D.C.

"BCBS Marketplace will provide an intuitive and personalized shopping experience to help retirees purchase the Medicare coverage that best meets their needs," said Maureen Sullivan, senior vice president and chief strategy officer for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

Employers who provide contributions to retiree coverage can also use BCBS Marketplace to help with benefit administration.

"BCBS Marketplace supports employers' commitment to their employees by facilitating a seamless transition to individual coverage when they retire," said Ms. Sullivan.
