Anthem CEO: AHCA may end up more 'repair' than 'repeal and replace'

As the Senate reviews the Congressional Budget Office's score of the American Health Care Act, Joseph Swedish, CEO of Indianapolis-based Anthem, said he expects the Senate bill to look like "a repair more than a repeal and replace," according to a Reuters report.

Mr. Swedish made the comment in New York City Wednesday at the UBS Global Healthcare Conference. He also said Anthem is in talks with 14 states about selling plans on the ACA exchanges for 2018, or "surgically extracting" its polices from markets.

"We would prefer not to extract ourselves if we can get the math to work," Mr. Swedish said.

The insurer serves 1.1 million individuals through health plans sold on the exchanges and an additional half a million in similar plans sold through third parities or brokers, according to the report. Mr. Swedish said Anthem is analyzing the effects of offering individual plans in coming years if it exits the 2018 exchanges.
