AHIP outlines payer demands if ACA is repealed

America's Health Insurance Plans, one of the nation's two leading industry trade groups, publicly outlined what insurers need from the government if the GOP repeals and replaces the ACA, reports The New York Times.

AHIP's demands included the following:

  • Clear commitment from President-elect Donald Trump's administration and congressional leaders that the federal government will continue offsetting some healthcare costs for low-income citizens.
  • Policies and regulations that encourage young and healthy people to sign up for coverage through state exchanges.
  • Increased transparency and information about the fate of Medicaid expansion moving forward.

AHIP CEO Marilyn Tavenner said the above demands are imperative to stabilize state marketplaces. "If insurance companies believe cost-sharing subsidies will not continue, they are going to pull out of the market during the next logical opportunity," Ms. Tavenner told The New York Times.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association — the other major trade group — has not publicly stated its position.
