AHIP launches initiative for data accuracy, care access

America's Health Insurance Plans — the health insurance industry's largest trade group — has created a six-month initiative to improve provider data accuracy and better enable consumers to have easier access to care.

As part of the initiative, AHIP and 12 of its members will work with providers to verify and update data in various health plans' provider directories. San Francisco-based BetterDoctor and Jacksonville, Fla.-based Availity have partnered with AHIP to oversee the technology aspect of the project.

"Consumers benefit when they have the information they need to make the best decisions about their coverage and their care," AHIP President and CEO Marilyn Tavenner said in a statement. "This latest pilot effort is designed to proactively address gaps in reporting in order to improve the experience for consumers and simplify the process for providers."

The AHIP members participating in the project are Calif.-based Anthem Blue Cross; Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana; Miami-based AvMed; Blue Shield of California; Fla.-based Cigna; Florida Blue; Los Angeles-based Health Net; Calif.-based Humana; Ind.-based Humana; Fla.-based Humana; Los Angeles-based L.A. Care Health Plan; Molina Healthcare of California; Long Beach, Calif.-based SCAN Health Plan; Fla.-based WellCare; and Sacramento, Calif.-based Western Health Advantage.

The initiative will launch in April 2016 and premiere in California, Indiana and Florida.
