Aetna says ACO plans saved $32M

Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna said it reduced member costs by $32 million since implementing value-based products and services in 2011.

The savings through Aetna Premier Care Network Plus — a national employer option — reflect a $29 per member per month cost reduction compared to Aetna's standard network plans. The network features ACOs in 10 locations with plans to add more.

Aetna said its ACO plans increased generic drug prescribing among participating providers and lowered hospital admissions by 8 percent since 2014. Approximately 42.5 percent of Aetna's medical claims payments go to physicians and providers practicing value-based care. The insurer aims to increase the percentage to 75 percent by 2020.
