Coverage shakeup in Cleveland: University Hospitals joins Medical Mutual of Ohio's SuperMed network

Cleveland-based Medical Mutual of Ohio SuperMed members will gain in-network access to all Cleveland-based University Hospitals facilities and providers for the first time in 20 years.

Roughly 650,000 SuperMed members had in-network access to UH community hospitals and physicians for decades; however, the system's flagship hospital and Bedford, Ohio, facilities were out-of-network for SuperMed policyholders, cleveland.com reports. This resulted from an exclusive contract between Medical Mutual and Cleveland Clinic promising significant cost increases for Medical Mutual if it added UH to its SuperMed network for employers and individuals.

However, the contract expired years ago. Thomas Zenty III, CEO of UH, told cleveland.com, "From my perspective, this had been, in the past, a rather significant interruption in the continuity of care that patients would receive. Now, all of those barriers have been removed across our entire health system."

Beginning Oct. 1, Medical Mutual will consider the following UH facilities as part of its SuperMed and Medicare Advantage networks: UH Cleveland Medical Center, including MacDonald Women's Hospital; UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland; UH Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland; and UH Bedford Medical Center.

Following the agreement, UH now has contacts with all major health insurers in the area, and Medical Mutual's SuperMed network comprises all major health systems in the region.
