5 data points on the US insured rate

The number of uninsured Americans has decreased by millions since 2010, although little change occurred between 2015 and 2016, according to new data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics.

Here are five key data points from NCHS.

1. In 2016, 28.6 million people lacked health insurance coverage. That's 20 million fewer people than in 2010 and no change from 2015, NCHS found.

2. An estimated 12.4 percent of adults age 18 to 64 were uninsured last year, while 20 percent had public coverage and 69.2 percent had private coverage.

3. Of the 136.4 million adults age 18 to 64 covered by private health insurance plans in 2016, nearly 5 percent were covered by private health insurance plans obtained through the federal ACA health insurance marketplace or state-based exchanges.

4. For Americans younger than age 17, 5.1 percent were uninsured last year, while 43 percent had public coverage and 53.8 percent had private coverage, the data show.

5. The data also show the number of Americans under age 65 with private insurance enrolled in a high-deductible health plan rose, from 36.7 percent in 2015 to 39.4 percent in 2016.
