State issues preliminary OK for Northwell hospital's heart transplant center

The New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council recommended final approval for New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health's proposed heart transplant center at the Manhasset, N.Y.-based North Shore University Hospital.

The health system received preliminary approval May 18, according to an emailed news release.

Northwell officials said no additional construction on the facility will be necessary. Officials plan to use the existing NSUH hospital suite, cardiothoracic intensive care unit and cardiac step-down unit for transplant surgeries.

Under the proposal, Northwell also committed to increasing organ donation throughout its hospital network.

The proposal will be sent to the state health commissioner for final approval.

"A life-saving heart transplant program at North Shore University Hospital will be a major resource for residents of Long Island, Queens and the outer boroughs who currently must travel outside of their community for transplantation services," Alan Hartman, MD, senior vice president and executive director of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Northwell Health, said in a statement.
