Hospital stays in Wisconsin decrease as costs increase: 4 statistics

The WHA Information Center — a subsidiary of Madison-based Wisconsin Hospital Association — reported the state's hospitals saw a decrease in average length of patient stay, but an increase in average cost per hospitalization last year, WPR reports.

Here are four statistics from the Wisconsin Health Care Data Report.

1. The average hospital stay in 2015 was around 4.4 days, a 2.2 percent decrease from the previous year.

2. Patients were charged an average $32,055 per hospitalization in 2015, up about 5 percent from $30,486 in 2014.

3. The number of hospitalizations in Wisconsin rose 0.4 percent in 2015, and the number of patient days decreased by 0.1 percent.

4. There was a 4.7 percent increase in reported emergency department visits, from 1.71 million in 2014 to 1.79 million last year.
