County to Mission Health: Reconsider ending labor, delivery services at Blue Ridge

Yancy County commissioners approved a resolution June 12 asking leaders of Spruce Pine, N.C.-based Blue Ridge Regional Hospital, and its parent company Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Health, to reconsider ending the hospital's labor and delivery services, according to ABC-13 News.

The resolution states that though delivery services may prove slightly more expensive to maintain, "those costs are outweighed by the dangers and challenges to our citizens to travel such great distance for obstetric care," according to the report.

Mission Health officials previously voted to end labor and delivery services at the hospital Sept. 30. Those opposed to the closure said patients in need of those services would have to travel to facilities roughly 20 miles to 50 miles away to receive care.
