Ambulance crashes in New York, killing patient

A Mohawk Ambulance vehicle reportedly crashed into a tree Wednesday, killing a patient and injuring two medical technicians on board, according to the Times-Union.

The vehicle was transporting Chris Aernecke, 64, from Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center to his home in Sloansville, N.Y.

Investigators said the ambulance careened into a tree just after 5 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Aernecke was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, Cody Bryans, 21, and Alyssa Bevilaqua-Shufelt, 20, were admitted to Albany Medical for non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Bryans had been treated and discharged from the facility as of Friday. It is unclear if Ms. Bevilaqua-Shufelt has also been released from the hospital.

Police said they plan to review footage from the camera and black box inside the vehicle. Investigators also said they are awaiting autopsy results to determine Mr. Aernecke's exact cause of death, according to the report.

Mohawk Ambulance Service released the following statement regarding the incident.

"On behalf of Mohawk Ambulance Service and all of our employees, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family in this very difficult time," said James McPartlon, president of Mohawk Ambulance Service. "Safety and patient care remain our top priority and we commit to holding our employees to the highest standards. We are working in full cooperation with law enforcement and together our agencies are investigating what happened surrounding this terrible event."
