Physician-owned hospitals have a long history of providing effective, quality care. Here are 32 of the best physician-owned hospitals in the United States. They are recognized for their commitment to patient safety and quality by their patients, staff, communities, industry associations and leading healthcare publications and ratings resources. Note: Hospitals are listed in alphabetical order.

 

Animas Surgical Hospital (Durango, Colo.)

This multi-specialty hospital and its physician owners strive to provide surgical excellence, an effort recognized by Consumer Reports, which ranked the hospital as the best in the state of Colorado. Animas has also received high patient satisfaction ratings on the U.S. News & World Report index, with 89 percent of patients ranking the hospital highest or very high in satisfaction, well above the national average of 64 percent. Animas, which opened in Dec. 2004 and is the first physician-owned hospital in Colorado that focuses on surgical healthcare and diagnostic imaging, features 12 private patient suites, which offer accommodations for one overnight guest, five operating rooms and its doctors and providers represent 27 specialties and subspecialties. Animas is led by Brett Gosney, who currently serves as president of the Physician Hospitals of America.

Arizona Spine and Joint Hospital (Mesa, Ariz.)

Established in 2003, Arizona Spine and Joint Hospital is widely known for its progressive and innovative approach to orthopedic, spine and podiatry surgeries, both outpatient and inpatient. SSH, led by CEO Timothy J. Noakes, averages 15,000 procedures annually, making it one of the busiest surgical hospitals in the country.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake (Southlake, Texas)

Physician-owned hospitals not only provide quality care, they are also good places to work. Led by Traci Bernard, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake has been recognized multiple times as one the Best Places to Work for in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine, as well as receiving national recognition for employee satisfaction. The acute-care hospital recently picked up the award for 2010. Internal surveys show that 97 percent of staff and physicians believe that THHMHS is the best place they have ever worked. Based on data submitted to the Surgical Care Improvement Project, which measures quality improvement data related to surgical complication rates, the hospital scored 100 percent in all but one area (in which they scored 90 percent). The attention to quality and patient and employee satisfaction has allowed the hospital to reap financial success as well, and THHMHS has seen its revenue increase 50 percent over 2008. THHMHS provides top-notch care in a full line of services, including 24-hour emergency medicine, imaging services, ENT, general surgery, orthopedics and neurosurgery. The hospital was awarded a five-Star recognition from HealthGrades for total knee replacement. Texas Spine & Joint Hospital (Tyler, Texas)

Texas Spine & Joint Hospital combines expert care in spine and joint treatment with state-of-the-art technology to provide excellent care to its patients in a comfortable environment. Led by Tony Wahl, the hospital features one of the only high-field open MRIs in Texas. The staff at the 20-bed hospital aims to provide a personalized experience, not only for patients, but for their physicians as well. TSJH has also been recognized by HealthGrades as the best hospital in Texas for spinal surgery and award the hospital with the Spine Surgery Excellence Award for 2008-9, which ranks TSHJ among the top 5 percent in the nation. HealthGrades has also given TSJH five-star ratings in spine surgery and joint replacement and has recognized its low infection rate of below 1 percent.
