2 Tenn. physicians injured in plane crash

Two Tennessee physicians were injured Oct. 7 when their single-engine plane crash landed within two minutes of taking off due to dense fog, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Christopher A. Landess, MD, and Jeff Williams, MD, were marooned in a cow pasture for 20 minutes before rescuers located them. Dr. Landess is regional medical director at Knoxville, Tenn.-based Team Health Mid-Atlantic, and until recently, Dr. Williams served as director of emergency services at Murfreesboro, Tenn.-based Saint Thomas-Rutherford Hospital.

Dr. Landess owns the 1965 aircraft that took off from Knoxville Downtown Island Airport. He planned to fly to Morristown, Tenn., and on to Jacksonville, N.C.

After taking off in heavy fog, Dr. Landess quickly landed the plane, breaking the windshield and ripping part of the right wing. Rescuers arrived 20 minutes after Dr. Landess called 911.

Dr. Landess and Dr. Williams were taken to Knoxville-based University of Tennessee Medical Center. Dr. Landess was listed in stable condition, and Dr. Williams was in serious condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
