Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth announced the ground breaking of a new $57.7 million emergency care center.

The 75,000-square-foot facility, which will connect to the main hospital via a sky bridge, will nearly triple the space of the existing emergency department. The expansion will include 27 additional beds, bringing the total number of ED beds to 90. Last year, the hospital had 97,309 patients ED visitors and expects to see 100,000 patients this year.

The emergency center will also feature a geriatric care clinic for elderly patients needing quick follow-up care after an ED visit, such as additional lab work or X-rays, according to the release. In addition, the new center will house a simulation multidisciplinary educational facility to allow physicians, staff and students to practice emergency care in mock scenarios.

The new emergency care center is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2013.
