Merritt Hawkins & Associates released its 2009 Review of Physician and CRNA Recruiting Incentives, which lists the best- and worst-paying jobs for physicians, according to a report in Forbes.

The survey found that primary care physicians were the lowest paid, with pediatricians receiving an average $171,000 annually and family practitioners receiving an average $173,000 annually. This, coupled with the average $140,000 in loans a graduating medical student owns, could account for the shortage in primary care providers, according to the report.

Orthopedic surgeons and cardiologists were the highest paid, earning and average $481,000 and $419,000, respectively.
