Survey: 90% of Physicians Don't Recommend Careers in Healthcare

A survey has found nine out of 10 physicians are unwilling to recommend healthcare as a profession, and 43 percent of respondents are considering retirement within the next five years due to changes in American healthcare, according to findings from The Doctors Company.

The survey — based on more than 5,000 responses from physicians and surgeons — revealed physicians' meager enthusiasm and optimism for American healthcare reform. Other major findings of the survey include:

• 65 percent of physicians do not think healthcare reform will reduce defensive medicine.
• 65 percent of physicians believe healthcare reform will negatively affect patient care.
• 51 percent of physicians believe healthcare reform will negatively impact their relationship with patients.

Donald J. Palmisano, MD, JD, former president of the American Medical Association and member of The Doctors Company Board of Governors, said the survey findings show a potential shift from people who feel "called" to healthcare, a shift that could threaten the next generation of healthcare providers.
