Rutgers University's Boards to Vote on University of Medicine and Dentistry Merger

Staff -
New Brunswick, N.J.-based Rutgers University's two governing boards will vote Nov. 19 on whether to approve a large academic restructuring with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark and Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., according to a New Jersey Star-Ledger report.

The vote will be the last hurdle for the merger, which New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie approved in August when he signed the New Jersey Medical and Health Science Education Restructuring Act. The legislation calls for part of Rutgers University to merge with Rowan University and divide UMDNJ's schools among the two.

Under the legislation, Rutgers will operate UMDNJ's medical schools in Newark and Piscataway, while Rowan University will merge with Rutgers' Camden, N.J., campus to operate UMDNJ's osteopathic school in Stratford, N.J. According to the report, UMDNJ's University Hospital in Newark will separate from the university and become its own state-owned entity.

All of the changes will take place July 1. According to the report, the vote by Rutgers' boards is largely symbolic, as officials from Rutgers and UMDNJ have been meeting for months to plan the merger. However, approval from the boards is necessary for the deal to finalize.
