Providence, R.I.-based Roger Williams Medical Center and St. Joseph's Health Services have received approval by the state health department to merge, according to a report by Providence Business News.

The two hospitals plan to create CharterCare Health Partners following approval by the state's Attorney General.

The two institutions plan to increase efficiencies through the creation of a larger, single healthcare organization. The merger was announced in February, and once completed, CharterCare will employ 3,200 people and have 579 licensed beds.
