Oregon Governor to Tout State's Medicaid Reform to Other Leaders

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber, MD, will speak on behalf of his state's plan to lower Medicaid costs in front of his peers of both parties at a National Governors Association meeting in Washington, D.C.

Although the state's model follows a similar tune for changing the way care delivery and reimbursement are made, what is unique is how Oregon was able to overcome the political barriers that often plague states attempting to make big changes in their health systems, according to a report by the Washington Post.

Gov. Kitzhaber said the political tension regarding health reform has "dialed down a couple of notches" and that there is real interest among governors of all parties to find innovative ways to lower healthcare spending.

HHS awarded Oregon a $45 million grant and $1.9 billion to secure its Medicaid program for five years. In exchange, the state is required to share its actions and results with other states and commit to a 2 percent decrease per-capita cost inflation without hurting quality or access to care.
