N.J. Gov. Chris Christie Approves University of Medicine and Dentistry Merger

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has signed into law legislation that will merge part of Rutgers University, based in New Brunswick, N.J., with Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., and divide the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey among the two, according to a Star-Ledger report.

Under the New Jersey Medical and Health Science Education Restructuring Act, Rutgers will operate UMDNJ's medical schools in Newark and Piscataway, while Rowan University will be merged with Rutgers' Camden, N.J., campus to operate UMDNJ's osteopathic school in Stratford, N.J.

UMDNJ's University Hospital in Newark will remain largely unaffected and will operate as a state-funded separate entity, according to the report.

A state task force recommended the merger in 2010.

Rutgers' board of governors and board of trustees must still approve the plan for it to move forward, according to the report.
