New Jersey's Virtua Health Pursues Boomers With Luxury Amenities

As many New Jersey hospitals struggle to turn a profit, Virtua Health is adding luxury wellness centers and other upgrades to cater to well-heeled Baby Boomer patients, according to a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Virtua Health, a four-hospital system based in Marleton, N.J., opened the Health and Wellness Center in Sewell, N.J., in late January and expects to break ground on another similar facility in Moorestown, N.J., in the coming months in an attempt to attract South Jersey patients who might otherwise seek treatment in the Philadelphia area, according to the Inquirer.
The 225,000-square-foot center in Sewell includes a same-day surgery center co-owned by physicians. It also includes a fitness center, heated pools and a spa. The center mixes medical treatment and fitness options, for example offering cardiac rehab in the fitness center, according to the Inquirer report.
In 2008, a year when the average New Jersey hospital had an operating margin of two-tenths of a percent, Virtua had a margin of 9 percent, according to New Jersey Hospital Association data cited by the Inquirer.
