New Category of Stand-Alone EDs Taking Root in Illinois
Since the Illinois passed legislation allowing stand-alone EDs last year, at least three such sites have opened in the state, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. The Lake Forest Hospital Grayslake Emergency Center, which opened last month in an exurb north of Chicago, expects to see about 40,000 patients a year.
The center sees patients with broken bones, food poisoning and even pneumonia and other respiratory problems, but victims of strokes or heart attacks would be taken to a hospital.
