Most States Sustain Coverage for Children, but Federal Subsidies End in 2011

Thirty-five states preserved or expanded health coverage for children and parents through Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Programs this year, according to a release from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

But maintaining state coverage levels in the recession depends on federal assistance that would stop at the end of 2010, before expanded coverage could begin under health reform.

KFF said 26 states improved healthcare access for children in 2009 while 15 states scaled back CHIP coverage and the rest did not change coverage.
