Medical Device Industry Concerned About PPACA Consequences

Staff -
As some in the medical community cheered in support of the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the medical device industry is concerned over a medical device tax provision in the law, according to a Boston Herald report.

"We continue to be concerned with the impact the 2.3 percent medical device tax will have on patient and caregiver access to new medical technologies," President of the Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council Tom Sommer said in the report.

Mr. Sommer and the council is concerned the tax will stunt research among medical device companies and result in workforce reduction.

The American Hospital Association has expressed concerns that the medical device tax will get passed on to hospitals and physician groups purchasing medical equipment.

Earlier this month, the House of Representatives voted to repeal the medical device tax, though the bill is not expected to pass through the Democrat-controlled Senate.
