Health Experts Launch Partnership for the Future of Medicare

A group of healthcare experts has launched the Partnership for the Future of Medicare, a bi-partisan organization focused on improving the healthcare of Medicare beneficiaries and ensuring the sustainability of the program.

The PFM will commission research from leading academics, institutions and think tanks focusing on key questions regarding Medicare's future. According to the release, the objective of the research will be to help policymakers better understand how to improve the quality of care Medicare provides while putting the program on a sustainable path long into the future.

Douglas Holtz-Eakin, former director of the Congressional Budget Office and former chief economic policy adviser to U.S Senator John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, and Ken Thorpe, chair for the department of health policy and management at Emory University in Atlanta and former deputy assistant secretary for HHS, are the co-chairs of the organization. The advisory board also includes other thought leaders in healthcare policymaking: Kavita Patel, MD, Jim Capretta, Steve Lieberman and Kate Baicker.

The PFM was formed by the advisory board members with initial support provided by United Health Group and Humana.
