General Electric and Intel have pledged $250 million to help Mayo Clinic develop in-home monitoring equipment that could reduce patients' hospitalizations and ED visits, according to a report by the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal.

In a research study this year, Mayo will use monitoring technology from GE and Intel to measure 200 high-risk patients' vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse and weight, ask them a daily set of questions and use videoconferencing for further patient evaluations.
